English Switzerland has a long humanitarian tradition. It has attached great importance to advancing and promoting respect for human rights, at least from a legal perspective. It has ratified eight out of the nine core international human rights instruments adopted within the United Nations framework, all eight fundamental conventions of the International Labour Organization, and most European human rights treaties, including the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (ECHR) , but not the European Social Charter. Switzerland endorses a monist approach, which means that international law does not have to be transposed into domestic law to be valid within the national legal order. Once approved according to domestic proceedings, treaties become part of Swiss law directly and without any need for a transformation act.
