Efficient strategy-use in associative memory diminishes with ageing. We used drawing (vs. writing) as an encoding tool for associative memory and observed benefits in younger but not in older adults. Moreover, younger adults in contrast to older adults, automatically used and benefitted from visualization encoding-strategies during drawing.
