Mobile-Based Language Learning in Adults: What Promotes Learning Performance the Best? : 62nd Annual Meeting of the Psychonomic Society (Online)

Technological developments in information and communication technologies offer almost permanent access to learning software. From the perspective of memory research, learning software offers a unique opportunity to gather data on learning and memory in a natural setting to an unprecedented level of detail than ever before. Hence, we used this advantage to explore predictors and factors contributing to optimal learning with a mobile vocabulary learning application. To this end, French- and German-speaking adults learned Finnish words for 2 weeks with a dedicated mobile application which enabled the manipulation of different learning principles (e.g., spacing, presentation modality, feedback type, rate of retrieval trials, language learning direction). Before using the application, participants were tested for working memory, sustained attention, vocabulary size, nonverbal intelligence, rhythm processing, and Finnish knowledge. The results are discussed in line with the literature on learning principles and cognitive predictors of vocabulary learning.
