There is mounting evidence that individuals on the autism spectrum have difficulties regulating their emotions, which has significant negative impacts on their daily functioning, mental health, and well-being. However, the origins and underlying mechanisms of emotion regulation difficulties in autism remain under-researched and poorly understood. In this chapter, we aim to synthesize existing knowledge about emotion regulation in autism within the theoretical framework of the extended process model, which postulates different stages involved in emotion regulation (i.e., emotion identification, strategy selection, implementation, and monitoring). This will allow us to consolidate the current emotion regulation in autism literature as well as help to identify future steps for research that will influence the formulation of future interventions.
